Radon is a radioactive gas (a by product of uranium decay) that is released into the ground and that can seep into the building from the foundations or basement floors. This unseen gas is particularly dangerous in enclosed structures, such as your building, and more so if the building is a well insulated, tight structure. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that up to 20,000 people in the U.S. die each year from lung cancer caused by radon. A rather scary statistic! Radon gas has been detected in dangerously high levels all over the country. Just because your neighbor's building tests out free of radon does not mean that it is not present in yours. Test results have varied greatly over distances as insignificant as 10 yards. There are estimates that approximately 20 percent of all American homes have higher than average levels of radon.
